4TH ANNUAL YOUTH SWINE EDUCATION DAY AT VA TECH


Who: Youth and adults interested in swine and PQA-Plus Certification
What: Swine-related talks, activities, Youth and Adult PQA-Plus Certification, and fun!
Where: Alphin-Stuart Arena on Plantation Road, Blacksburg VA
When: February 26, 2011
Why: If you are interested in raising or showing pigs, want to make friends who are interested in swine, or just learn more information about swine, join us for the 4th annual Youth Swine Education Day!

OCCC Christmas Parade Apps Now Available

All 4-H clubs wishing to have a float in the annual Orange Christmas Parade are directed to the Chamber of Commerce's website for the application. The parade will be December 5, 2010, at 4:30 p.m., following the usual route of Madison Road, Main Street, and Caroline Street. Hope to see great 4-H participation promoting our organization to the public!

2010 4-H Poinsettia Fundraiser

Hope sales are going well for your club.

Remember that all orders are due to the Extension Office by Monday, November 15th.

All orders must be picked up Friday, December 3rd from 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office.

4-H OFFICER TRAINING


4-H Officer Training will be held Saturday, November 6th from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Orange. All youth are welcome to attend, not just the officers, but all officers are expected to attend. The Boys & Girls Club is located at the Taylor Education Administration Complex, 200 Dailey Drive, (Old Prospect Heights Middle School).

ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT


The 2010 4-H Achievement Night will be held on Sunday, November 14th at 3:00 p.m. at the Orange County High School's auditorium. The program will highlight each club's achievement's over the past year and recognize outstanding youth in each club and in 4-H. Nominations are being sought for the Harry T. Peters Award and The Orange 4-H Scholarship. Applications for both can be found in the 4-H website sidebar at http://ocva4-h.pbworks.com/ . Look forward to seeing you there.

LIVESTOCK CLUB GOES PINK


If you saw a lot of pink at the Orange County Fair this past summer, it was in support of the Livestock Club's cancer fundraiser. They raised $1,425.00 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Congratulations and thanks!

HONEY OF AN ESSAY CONTEST


The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees is holding it's annual essay contest with a chance to win cash prizes statewide and nationally. The topic for this year's essay is "U.S. Honey: A Taste for Every Preference" and pertains to how regional plants affect the taste of honey. Glenwood Show Committee Seeks Adult Volunteers

Parents of children who show at the Glenwood beef and sheep shows in April are invited to attend planning committee meetings. The first one will be held Monday, October 25, at 7 p.m. in Winchester. Please contact the Extension office for more details.

Benefit Longaberger Basket Bingo and Raffle

Like to play Bingo and support a good cause at the same time?? Come to Longaberger Basket Bingo on Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m. at the East Orange Ruritan Club Building (Route 20 and Route 522 in Unionville). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with Early Birds starting at 6:45 p.m. Pre-sale tickets-$20; at the door-$25. There will also be a raffle drawing for a village basket, small laundry basket, and medium market basket. Raffle tickets are $2 each and can be purchased at the Orange Extension Office. Proceeds will benefit the 4-H Livestock Club and East Orange Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund. For ticket information, call 854-6471 or 854-6877.

Fall Harvest Barn Bash

There will be a Fall Harvest Barn Bash on Saturday, October 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Wilbanks Farm (9140 Rapidan Road, Orange). There will be food, kids' activities, hay rides and barn dancining (music by DJ). Tickets are $30/couple or $15/single. KIDS are admitted free and all activites are included in the ticket price. Proceeds benefit the Orange County Fair Association. For advance tickets, please stop by the Orange County Extension Office.

4-H All Star Nominations Due November 15


If you're at least 15 years of age and would like to apply to be a 4-H All Star, this message is for you! Nomination forms are available online as is additional information about points calculation, induction requirements, etc. Being tapped as an All Star is the highest honor one can receive in Virginia 4-H and all Orange County members are strongly encouraged to apply. If you're too young to apply, start the process now because it takes a lot of record-keeping. If you don't have enough points yet, work with your leader and/or Extension Agent to develop a plan to help you earn enough points. You can DO THIS!!! Forms are due to Kaci for a first review on November 15th.

Interested in Surveying???

Kids with an interest in learning about surveying are invited to attend a special program at the James Madison Museum on Saturday. Meet at 10:00 a.m. to learn about surveying and give it a try under the guide of a professional. This program is free. The museum is located on Caroline Street in the Town of Orange.

Thursday 10/14 Farm Tour Postponed

The fourth grade Farm Tour scheduled for tomorrow (10/14) has been postponed due to forecasted rain. This change affects Orange Elementary, Gordon Barbour Elementary, and Grymes Memorial.

Youth in Agriculture Event Scheduled for October 28


Youth who are committed to a future in agriculture are invited to attend a special event hosted by Virginia Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Farm Credit on October 28th in Harrisonburg. Orion Samuelson, famed RFD-TV personality will be present to discuss the future of agriculture. He is backed by a panel, including the Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture, an NCBA rep, and several active adults who are advocates for youth in agriculture.
