Goat Day Camp Offered in Fauquier in June

Orange 4-H livestock and goat exhibitors are invited to a June 25 Goat Day Camp at the Fauquier County Fairgrounds.  Hosted by the Fauquier 4-H Beef and Boer Goat Club, the event will feature sessions on animal health and nutrition, selection and management of your show goat, a showmanship clinic, and a skillathon.  Members are encouraged to bring their own goat for this event.  Cost is $15 per youth and includes a T-shirt, lunch, workshop materials and prizes.  For more information, e-mail Rhonda Williams at dillonandkendall@yahoo.com.  Registrations are due June 1^st. 

 

Kids' Day Planned at Farmers' Market

One of Orange’s Master Gardeners asked that we share with you information about Opening Day and a special kick-off celebration for the Orange Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 7^th.  The market will be set up on Short Street, next to the train station, right in downtown Orange.  Kids’ Day will feature face painting, balloons, baked goods, fresh produce, flowers, plants, and a planting activity for kids.  Make sure you plan a visit between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and keep the Orange Farmers’ Market in mind every Saturday until October.

Costa Rican & Norwegian Teen Boys Need Host Families

Virginia 4-H has several Costa Rican and Norwegian boys (ages 15 to 18) who need host families for the following dates:
Costa Ricans: June 17 to July 16
Norwegians: June 29 to July 27

This is a great opportunity to bring the world to you, mutually sharing customs, culture and ideas. For U.S. students studying Spanish at school, this might be a good chance to practice language skills. Those hosting Norwegians may learn some of that language, too.

True Blue Cloverbuds and Livestock Club Join Forces for Community Service Project

Members of both clubs will help tend and reestablish flower beds at Unionville Elementary School on Sunday, May 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the school.  Livestock Club members are needed to assist the Cloverbuds in their work and handle some of the more difficult tasks.  The project will count as a community service project requirement for livestock members to show at the fair this summer.  Volunteer Jennifer Bryington is chairing this project. 

Bit N' Bridle Youth Perform Well at State Equismartz Weekend

On April 8th and 9th, the Orange County Bit N’ Bridle 4-H club participated in the EquiSmartz State Hippology and Horse Judging Contest. Three members participated in this event: Kylie Kincaid, a Junior; Charlotte Manvell, a Junior; and Delaney O’Donnell, a Senior. We are pleased to share their results.

Delaney participated in the presentation contest and received 7th place for her Cleveland Bay Horses presentation.

For the Hippology Contest:

Kylie (Junior): test and slides, 7th place team; stations, 8th place team; judging, 4th place team; team problem, 7th place team; and 7th place team overall. (Kylie formed a team with Warren County ) 

Charlotte (Junior): judging 8th place team. (Charlotte participated with the Nokesville 4-H Club)  Delaney (Senior): test and slides, 4th place individual, 9th place team; stations, 10th place individual, 9th place team; judging, 2nd place individual, 9th place team; team problem, 9th place. Delaney placed 3rd overall and her team received 9th place overall. (Delaney formed a team with the Louisa County Young Riders)

In the world of EquiSmartz Horse Judging, the results were as follows:

Kylie received: 9th place in individual performance judging, 5th place with her team; team reasons, 2nd place team award; and 5th place overall with her team. (Kylie competed as part of the Warren County team )Charlotte received: 8th place for team reasons; and 7th in the team performance division.  Delaney received: 9th place in halter judging individual, 8th place team halter judging; 8th place performance judging individual, 7th place with her team; team reasons they received 7th place; in overall judging her team received 8th place. Delaney received 8th place overall as an individual, giving her the opportunity to be a member of the Virginia State 4 H Horse Judging Team.

Bit N' Bridle Club Reports on District Contest Achievements

On April 2nd, three members of the Bit N’ Bridle 4-H Club traveled to Ruckersville to compete in the Northern District 4-H Hippology & Horse Bowl Contest. Delaney formed a team with the Louisa County Young Riders, Charlotte formed a team with the Nokesville 4-H Club, and Kylie formed a team with Warren County.

In the Junior Hippology division, Charlotte and the Nokesville 4-H Club team placed 5th in Test and Slides, 5th in Stations, 4th in Judging, and 5th Overall, while Charlotte placed 10th in individual judging.

Also in the Junior Hippology division, Kylie placed 1st in individual Stations, while she and the Warren County team placed 6th in Test and Slides, 1st in Stations, 5th in Judging, and 3rd overall.

In the Senior Hipppology division, Delaney placed 1st in Test and slides, 2nd in Stations, and 2nd overall. She and the Louisa Young Riders placed 5th in Test and Slides, 4th in Stations, 2nd in Judging, and 4th Overall.In Senior Horse Bowl, Delaney finished as the 3rd place individual, and she and the Louisa Young Riders were the 6th place team.

In Junior Presentations, Charlotte earned a Blue Danish Ribbon for her presentation on Gerbils, and Delaney also earned a Blue Danish Ribbon in the Senior division, for her presentation on the Cleveland Bay Horse.

4-H Alumna Continues to Achieve in Equestrian Events

Ashleigh Ramey, alumna of the 4-H Hoof Mates Club, won her Novice Equitation on the Flat class at the IHSA Zone Championships on April 2nd in Sewanee, TN.  She will now be attending the IHSA National Championships in Lexington, KY, May 3-8.  Good job, Ashleigh!

CONGRESS DEADLINE... Friday, April 22nd

State 4-H Congress is held the week of June 20^th - 23^rd on the Virginia Tech Campus in Blacksburg, VA. The cost is $185.00 this year and to attend you must be a current 4-H member age 14- 18! The theme: 4-H on Fire: This is why we’re hot will be celebrated all week to show 4-H spirit throughout the state! The Congress Delegate packet is now posted to the Orange County website at, http://tinyurl.com/ocva4-h. All registrations to attend Congress are due by Friday April 22^nd!

Summer Camps: CSWCD has 4 openings for two week-long summer camps for high school students from our member counties. Forestry Camp is held in June and Youth Conservation Camp is held in July. Scholarships: CSWCD awards up to $3,000 in college scholarships each year to high school seniors as well as undergraduate and graduate students that are majoring in a field related to conservation that live in our member counties. The next Glenwood Livestock Show meeting has been announced:  Monday, May 9, Warrenton Farm Credit.  Leaders are asked to bring youth evaluations to the meeting. 

Six Japanese Boys Need 4-H Host Family for July 24-August 20

Local families have a wonderful opportunity for an international experience this summer without leaving the comfort of your home!  Six Japanese boys ages 12-14 still need host families as part of the 4-H LABO exchange program.  Host homes must have a boy within two years of the Japanese student’s age.  Here is an example of a youth who hopes to visit the U.S. this summer:

                14-year old boy, enjoys basketball, reading, listening to pop music; wants to live in different culture, see the great outdoors, play basketball, BBQ, fish, attend a county fair, possibly go camping; talkative, laughs a lot, intermediate swimmer, favorite subject is P.E.; cannot be in a home with indoor cats

To host a Japanese youth, please contact the Extension Office at 672-1361.  Think of what a summer 2011 could be – one for the history books because of a great experience as a 4-H host family!

Orange Farm Bureau Announces Scholarship Winners

Orange County Farm Bureau is pleased to announce that two “Taking Pride in Agriculture” scholarships will be awarded this year. Only one scholarship was planned, but in a field of outstanding applicants the top two came to a tie. The scholarship committee decided that rather than split the funds, full $1,000-scholarships will be awarded to both Coty Goodwin and William “Marty” Harris. Congratulations to both students and we wish them the best as they begin their studies at Virginia Tech.

This year's applicants for the 2011 “Taking Pride in Agriculture” scholarship were all superb students, making it a difficult process to narrow the list down. Thank you to all who applied.

The Orange County Farm Bureau scholarship is for high school seniors who have applied to a college or university with the intent of pursuing a degree in an agriculture related field. A committee judges the applicants using a 100-point system that awards 15 points for 4-H and Farm Bureau involvement, 10 points for extracurricular activities, 20 points for an essay and 35 points for scholastic ability (weighted  based on the difficulty of the student’s chosen course load). Finalists are invited for an interview with the scholarship committee which contributes the final 20 points to the score.

Additional Glenwood Show Results Announced

Congratulations to Livestock Club members who competed in the Glenwood Park Livestock Show in Leesburg on Saturday.  Robert Nixon earned the title of Reserve Champion Intermediate Showman, and he also had the Reserve Champion Angus Heifer.  Elizabeth Nixon’s steer was Reserve Champion Crossbred Steer, and John Michael Knight exhibited the Champion and Reserve Champion Simmental Heifers.  As previously mentioned, Stella Bradford had the Champion Crossbred Heifer and Reserve Grand Champion Heifer of the show.  Jake Koontz and Brooke Fleming also competed in the steer division.  Way to go, Orange 4-H!

Members Win at Two Separate 4-H Contests

Delaney O'Donnell and Stella Bradford had great accomplishments in 4-H this weekend.  Delaney, a member of the Bit N' Bridle Club, competed in the state Equismartz weekend for horse project members.  She was in presentations, hippology and horse judging contests and she made it onto the state horse judging team.  This means she will represent Virginia 4-H in various contests around the country later this fall.  Way to go, Delaney!

A number of Livestock Club members exhibited at the Glenwood Park Livestock Show in Leesburg on Saturday, and Stella Bradford's heifer named Diamond was named Champion Commercial Heifer and Reserve Grand Champion of show.  Congratulations!

VIRGINIA BEEF QUEEN CONTEST

The Virginia Beef Queen Contest will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011 in conjunction with the Virginia Beef Expo.  Three scholarships will be offered in the amount of $500.00 for the winner, $300.00 for the runner-up and $200.00 for third place.  The Virginia Beef Queen will represent the Cattle Industry at various events throughout the year.  To learn more and for an entry form click here   http://www.vabeefexpo.org/beef_queen_contest.php 

District Livestock Show Reminder: Entries Due April 15th

April 15^th is not just tax day, it’s also the day that entries are due for the District Livestock Show in Culpeper.  Entry packets are available on the Orange 4-H website in the document library. 

 

District Contests Winners Recognized

Orange 4-H was well-represented in this past weekend’s District Contests.  Share-the-Fun talent, presentations, and public speaking individuals competed, as well as team horse events in quiz bowl and hippology.  Equine project youth will advance to the state Equismartz competition this coming weekend in Lexington, and senior competitors have the opportunity to advance to State 4-H Congress in Blacksburg in June.

Blue ribbon winners at districts included Lorynn Kilby, Jaclyn Phipps, Carly Ann Hanson, Sydney Copperthite, Christina Amoruso, Maiah Daniel, Garrett Ellinger, Aidan Templin, Star Dodson, Victoria Walsh, Mariely Aquin, Baylee Rollins, Christopher Place, Delaney O’Donnell, Charlotte Manvell, Wilhelmina Stover, Sara Bacar, and Victoria Boergermann.  Red ribbon winners were Gabby Rudnick, Brianna Holmes, Stephanie Boergermann, Haley Evans, Garret Chambers, Rebecca Akers, and Taylor Rollins.
