FW: OCHS gets the trophy again

The four Orange County High School 4-H Angler teams of two anglers each captured the Virginia State High School Fishing Championship sponsored by The Bass Federation of Virginia.  The tournament was held at Buggs Island, Boydton, Virginia, on Saturday, May 21, and attracted teams from North Carolina and Virginia.  Buggs Island is a new lake for the Orange team and the members did extremely well in their pre-fish evaluation.  Three out of four Orange teams  caught their limit of five fish.

Dylan McGhee caught the big fish (the tie breaker) for all teams across both states, a 4+ pounds largemouth bass on a  green pumpkin carolina rig. He and his partner Franklin Marrs tied for  4th place in the Virginia standings with a total bag weight of 8.46 lbs.  Michael Sidle and Steven Mundell had a total weight of 8.46 lbs. for their five fish.   Kasey Henshaw and Austin Clore caught 4 fish for a total of 5.79 lbs.  Devon Bowling and Austin Mitchell had nearly 9.6 lbs, but were penalized most of that weight due to a mix up in weigh-in time.   The top three teams for Orange accounted for 22 lbs. and thus brought home the championship trophy for Orange.  All those who participated may advance to the World Finals in Russellville, Arkansas, the end of July.   Adult boat captains  Wayne Dorman, Brian Green, Guy Davis, and OCHS Sponsor - Becky Gore volunteered their time to get these youngsters on the water.

Congratulations to Nancy Lawler, Unit Administrative Assistant, who won the state Meritorious Support Award from Extension honor society Epsilon Sigma Phi.  Nancy was recognized at the Virginia Extension Service Association meeting last week at Sweet Briar College with an engraved plaque and a beautiful flower arrangement.  Nancy has worked for Extension for 34 years and most everyone who comes in contact with our office knows that she is the heart and soul of the office.  From answering the phones to greeting visitors with a smile, Nancy will always go the extra mile to find information or publications, help a 4-H member complete an application, register clients for an event, or serve as a go-to person for information and answers.  She puts in long hours, shows excellent attention to detail, and provides outstanding support and service to colleagues in the office.  Please congratulate Nancy on her award the next time that you see her!

The 2011 Youth Nomination Location Schedule for the 2011 State Fair of Virginia has been released. All youth who are showing in Market Lamb, Commercial Ewe Lamb, Youth Market Goat and Youth Market Beef will need to officially weigh and nominate any animals they plan to show. We are fortunate to have a site right here in Orange: Glenmary Farm on Monday, June 20, at 9:00 a.m.

All market animals (beef, sheep, and goats) need to be nominated in order to be eligible to show. Please make sure that this list gets distributed to those in your county or area that might have an interest in showing at the 2011 State Fair Youth Market shows.
