Local Food Bank Benefits from 4-H Service Project and 4-H Project Animals

The Love Outreach Food Pantry will receive a donation of several hundred pounds of pork next week as the result of a generous donation from Wise Services & Recycling of Culpeper and a service project by the Orange 4-H Livestock Club.  The food pantry reports that their seven freezers are nearly empty, so this comes at just the right time.

Jesse & Janet Wise donated four hogs purchased in the Orange County Fair 4-H Auction last weekend, and the livestock club members raised money to pay for the processing of these hogs.  The livestock club's Kiss-a-Cow contest was based on a similar 4-H event in another county.  4-H volunteer Ron Burleson, ag agent Steve Hopkins, and Chamber of Commerce director Barbara Bannar were in a contest to see who got the most "votes" by collecting spare change in jars during the fair.  On Saturday night, it was announced that Steve Hopkins had received the most donations, so he had to kiss a cow in the sale ring on Saturday night.  The proceeds are now being used to ensure that Orange County residents have access to fresh, high-quality pork through the Love Outreach Food Pantry.

Congratulations to Kim and Elizabeth Nixon for spearheading the Kiss-a-Cow fundraiser, and many thanks to Wise Services & Recycling for their generous donation.
