Stockman's Team

The Stockman's Practice schedule is now on the 4-H Calendar over on the blog! There will be more practices added, but our first practice of the year will be on January 7 from 6-7:30 here at the extension office. Not on the Stockman's Team and interested in being on it or want more information? We talk and learn about breeds of livestock, feeds, equipment, meats, and then judge animals, and have a FABULOUS time doing it! Contact the extension office if you have questions.

Youth Market Animal Quality Assurance Program

New learning opportunity!  We will be putting on two sessions on youth Market Animal Quality Assurance. The purpose of the program will be to teach all youth participating in any market animal program the basics of quality assurance, and the general good production practices.  We will talk about herd health management, the proper way to use antibiotics and other medicines, how important record keeping is, how to keep good treatment and other records, providing good animal care, and other assorted topics.  There will be lots of hands on activities to participate in.
Not only that, but participants will also be Youth PQA Plus (Pork Quality Assurance) certified when they leave.  This isn't only open to exhibitors showing swine, it is good information for EVERYONE with a market animal to have!
The two options are: January 31 from 6-8, and February 13 from 6-8.  We need a minimum of 5 kids per time with no more than 15 per session.

4-H Day at the State Capitol

Don't forget- 4-H Day at the State Capitol will be here before we know it! (February 12)  This is an awesome chance to go see what our legislators do in Richmond, talk to them about what 4-H means to you, and go on some pretty cool tours.  Please contact Sarah or Kaci and let them know if you are interested or want more information!

Poinsettia Pick Up

Poinsettias are ready for pick up!  Come by the office anytime between now and 7 pm tonight, and between 8-5 tomorrow.

Livestock Club Christmas Party

This is a reminder that our December Livestock Club meeting will be Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Grymes Memorial School.  We will start at 6:30 p.m. since we will be eating.  Everyone please bring a dish to share and a gift for Toys-for-Tots.

Market Steer Weigh-in Moved to 9:00 a.m. January 12th

A Blast from the Past:  4-H Steer Weigh-in, circa 2006???

Enjoy the extra hour of sleep!  The market steer weigh-in will be held at 9:00 a.m. at Glenmary Farm in Rapidan on Saturday, January 12, 2013.  All 4-H members planning to show a market steer must nominate/weigh-in their steer(s) at this event.  All animals must be fully castrated by the weigh-in date.  If you have questions, please contact beef project leader Keith Fleming or call the Extension office.  Good luck!
