Calling All 4-H Artists to Design Statewide T-shirt

ALL 4-H members, regardless of club or camp, are invited to create the 2013 State 4-H Horse Show T-shirt design.  We are proud to claim last year's winner, Delaney O'Donnell, so lets work for another Orange County winner this year.  Entries are due May 10 to Blacksburg.

THE DESIGN CRITERIA ARE:

  1. The design must fit on an 8 ½ x 11” piece of white paper.
  2. Limit of 4 colors one of which must be green (the clover), use solid colors with high contrast and no shading or color gradients. Image must be dark/bold enough to scan.
  3. One entry per contestant.
  4. All entries must be original-- your own idea and design -- tracing another person’s work or clip art is not acceptable.
  5. Do not use newspaper, TV, book or computer and film cartoon characters or other copyright ideas, i.e. Garfield, Coca-Cola, Snoopy.
  6. Computer-generated artwork and text are not acceptable and will be disqualified. Text can/will be added by the tee shirt printer.
  7. The design should reflect the total 4-H horse program. Keep it simple, to the point and clearly about the theme.
  8. Remember it is to be designed for use on the back of a T-shirt.
  9. Designs with a clover are fine.
  10. Designs using the 4-H emblem (the clover with the H in each leaf) must follow these rules:
    1. The 4-H emblem must always appear as a whole and complete emblem with trademark info.
    2. The 4-H emblem cannot be changed in any way.
    3. No text or image may be placed over any part of the 4-H emblem.
    4. The actual 4-H emblem appears below. In cases where the 4-H emblem isdrawn into the artwork, it will be pulled out electronically and replaced with the official emblem. (so you don’t to draw it perfectly)
    5. Likenesses of a clover may be used elsewhere in the drawing but should just be a green 4-leaf clover without the H’s on each leaf….
  11. All members, regardless of the projects they carry, may submit a design.
  12. The designs submitted become the property of the Virginia 4-H Horse Program and by submission of a design, authorization is given to use the designs in State level program promotion.

Be Part of the 2013 4th of July Parade in Washington DC!

Virginia 4-H groups have been invited to participate in the 2013 4th of July Parade in Washington, D.C.  They need volunteers to help carry helium balloons, flags, large feather flags, stars, and banners for the parade. Volunteers that help carry balloons need to be over the age of 18 and weigh more than 110lbs. On average, they wouldn’t like to go younger than 14 years of age for any volunteer position, if possible.  Volunteers would need to report that morning at 9:45.  The parade starts at 11:45 and ends at 2.  The parade route is one mile long and is all flat. The parade route steps off from the intersection of 7th and Madison Drive, travels one block to Constitution Avenue, turns left onto Constitution Avenue and goes from 7th and Constitution Avenue to 17th and Constitution Avenue where it begins to disband.

If you have any questions, or would like to register your group to help, please contact Amy Walp at awalp6@aol.com.

Orange 4-H Archery Club Reports on Activities

By Jake Bernard, Club Reporter

The majority of our club went on a field trip to Richmond to visit the General Assemby on February 12thDelegate Scott and Senator Reeves were so kind to make time in their day to meet with us.  We were able to watch the voting process in the General Assembly along with over 800 other 4-H members. It was a beautiful day.

We had a great practice session on February 15th, we are learning all of the do's and don'ts of safety and scoring for archers.

On March 9th, we will be taking a field trip to Augusta County Archers Club, where they have graciously agreed to work with us one-on-one regarding technique.

County Share-The-Fun and Presentations Contest

This year, the Extension office will be offering a county-wide Share the Fun Talent Show contest and Presentations contest.  The Share the Fun Contest will be held on March 27 at the Orange County High School Auditorium   There are three school-wide contests: one at Locust Grove Middle School, one at Prospect Heights Middle School, and one at Orange County High School.  Blue ribbon high scorers from each of the six categories will be invited to come participate in the county-wide contest the 27.  However, if your school does not offer a Share The Fun contest and you would like to participate in the countywide contest, contact Sarah to set up a time to come to the Extension office to perform.
The county-wide Presentations contest will be on March 29 here at the extension office.  Once you do your presentation at the club level, if you would like to participate with your topic once again you may do so at the county level!  This would be a great opportunity for you to see what other people outside of your club are interested in or doing.
These events would be great practice if you want to compete at the district level with your talent or presentation.
Let Sarah or Kaci know if you have any questions or would like to participate in either of these events!

Club Presentations

As the majority of clubs in Orange County require a presentation be given during one of the meetings, there is help available for members!  On the document library, here, under the Presentations/Public Speaking tab, there is a presentations "how-to", public speaking "how-to," and a presentations scoring guideline sheet.  Please use these while you are preparing your presentations, and feel free to call or contact either Kaci or Sarah with any questions you may have!
