OC 4-H Alumni in the News

Once a 4-H'er, always a 4-H'er!  We're proud to share updates on some of our Orange 4-H young alumni.

Amanda Ramey, longtime 4-H horse club member who also conducted dog and sheep projects, will graduate with honors from Virginia Intermont College this coming weekend.  She will receive her degree in English Literature and Language.

Bobby Chambers, former 4-H Livestock Club President, will graduate with a degree in Engineering from Virginia Tech.  He recently competed on the university's Baja Car Team, which designs, builds and races an off-road, one-person vehicle.  Bobby served as the team's Drivetrain Team Leader, and he will begin an engineering career in Atlanta, GA, after graduation.

Congratulations to Ashleigh Ramey, former 4-H HoofMates member, who received the 2013 Emily Hilscher Memorial Scholarship from the Intercollegiate Horseshow Association.  Hilscher died in the Virginia Tech tragedy in 2007.

Kudos to these young alumni, and please continue to send us information for the blog!  We want the world to know how great our Orange County 4-H members are!

Horse Declaration Reminder

Don't forget!  If you have a 4-H project horse that you expect to show at a district or state level event this year, you must have your Project Horse Declaration form turned into the Extension Office by May 1.  This is a FIRM deadline set by the state office, so please remind your friends to get this done.  We want everyone to be able to participate this year.

Orange Goat Club and Bit-n-Bridle Club Hold Joint Meeting with Veterinarian

By Eryn Connell, Orange 4-H Goat Club
Saturday, April 13, the Orange County Goat Club and the Bit-n-Bridle Horse Club met for a joint meeting. Dr. Joan Prasse was our guest speaker and provided lots of great info on basic handling and taking vitals on horses and goats. We all got to take turns checking vitals on horses and learning about ornery goats! The big word we learned for the day was " borborygmus!" Bet you can't guess what that means! Yep, gut noises!

This was a great learning experience and "hopefully" our animals will be all the safer for it!
