Mother and Daughter Weekend
The Northern Virginia 4-H Center is offering a Mother and Daughter weekend on April 26-27 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center in Front Royal.
It will be two days packed with adventure and the opportunity to have a meaningful experience with each other. They will participate in great adventure in a relaxed, supportive, friendly atmosphere. Participants will do activities in environmental education, leadership, outdoor adventure, and have fun learning!
The cost for the program is $75 per person (for the first mother/daughter pair, $55 for each additional person in the family) and includes lodging for one night, two days of programs, 4 meals, and an evening campfire program. All participants must be at least 9 years old.

Adventure Summer Day Camps!
It's never too early to start planning your summer activities! Get out of the house and do something different this summer. The Northern Virginia 4-H Center in Front Royal is offering Adventure Day Camps on Fridays. The day camps are for 9-15 year olds and will be led by 4-H staff. Drop off and pick-up will be at the 4-H center. Most activities are from 8 am- 4 or 5 pm.

IFYE Host Families Needed
Host families are still needed for delegates for 2-4 weeks this summer. The delegates will be arriving from Austria, Finland, Greece, and Argentina. Most of them are female, but there are some teen boys from Argentina.

Here are some of the delegates that will be coming and will need host families:
-Julia is 26 years old and grew up on a farm in Upper Austria. She has two brothers, ages 19 and 22. Her parents still run the family farm, raising crops and pigs. She enjoys traveling, meeting friends, and seeing movies. Last year she went on an exchange to Wales and England, and she says that it is much better to experience life in another country by living with families than just being a tourist. She has worked for a bank but is now studying law.
-Lisa is 23 years old and grew up on a farm raising crops and potatoes. Her parents still run the farm, and she has a brother, age 21, and a sister, age 14. Her grandmother also lives on the farm. She has been living in an apartment with two roommates while working in the Design Center Linz (event location) in the Sales and Marketing Department. She enjoys reading, hiking, running, yoga, traveling, and meeting friends.
-Elisa is 18 and from Finland. Her family lives in the countryside. Her father works as a development manager and her mother is a journalist with the local newspaper. She has sisters age 20, 16, and 14, and a brother age 8. She likes animals, especially dogs, and wants to be a veterinarian. She enjoys hiking, skiing, reading, movies, crafts, and shopping. She plays accordian.
-Paiia is 24 from Finland. She is a student in a Finnish Theater College. Her mother is a nurse and her dad works with computers. She has a little brother, two dogs, and a cat. She has worked on theater sets, as a guide in a car museum, a waitress, and a kitchen helper. She would like to visit a farm with horses and know more about horse shows. She likes riding, acting, dancing from ballet to hip hop, singing, dog training, and reading. Lactose free diet.
-Anna is 16 and from Greece. Her father is an engineer and her mother is a housewife. She has brothers ages 19 and 9. She cannot eat okra. She likes dancing, singing, and theater, as well as sports, camping, biking, movies, shopping, and computer games.
There is also a need for families for teens from Argentina and Finland. The inbound delegates will be matched with host families once we receive the host family application forms. They will arrive to the host families on Tuesday, July 8, and depart on Wednesday, August 6.

Ag Discovery Camp
The 2014 AgDiscovery Program, which is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture, is a 2-4 week summer camp for middle school and high school students. It is a great opportunity for youth with an interest in Agriculture/Veterinary medicine and other agriculture-related fields. There are 17 venues, all Land-Grant Colleges or Universities across the U.S. that will host camps this summer. Each venue has a unique focus. Virginia’s own Virginia State University is hosting an AgDiscovery camp this year for the third time!

All AgDiscovery camps are FREE, as parents/guardians will only need to provide transportation for participants. Here is a quick overview of VSU’s program:
· The VSU program will convene from June 15-28, 2014. It is designed for teens (14-17) who are interested in animal science, veterinary science, and/or food science. Participants will take part in hands-on educational activities related to these topics, both on campus with VSU faculty and during field trips with various practitioners off campus. They will live in dorms on campus and dine in Jones Dining Hall for most meals. There is no cost to participants for the program, and competition to get in is high (VSU received 41 applications for the 16 slots in 2013).

Stockmans and Livestock Judging Team Results
The Orange 4-H Stockman's and Livestock Judging Teams traveled to Blacksburg for the annual Block and Bridle Competitions on March 21 and 22. Individual and team results were great! We are so proud of our teams and how well they performed. It took lots of time and practice that certainly paid off!
During the Stockman's contest, contestants identified types of feeds, breeds of animals, equipment that is commonly used, cuts of meat, judged swine, sheep, and beef cattle, hay, and meats. They also had to take a quiz asking questions on basic livestock knowledge, and senior members had to compete a team problem.
For the Judging Contest, the members judged classes of sheep, swine, cattle, and goats. The senior team also gave reasons on three of those classes.

RRMG Scholarship
New Scholarship Opportunity!
The Rapidan River Master Gardener Association has created a brand new scholarship for this year! To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, the student must:
- be a current senior in Orange, Madison, Culpeper, or homeschool programs
- Graduate from high school this year
- have a GPA of 2.00 or higher
- be planning to pursue a career in the field of horticulture or agriculture
- be enrolled as a full time horticulture or agriculture student in an institution of higher learning in the fall semester immediately following graduation
The scholarship application must be postmarked by Friday, April 25, 2014.

VNLA Shoosmith Scholarship
Reminder: VNLA Shoosmith Scholarship Applications are due April 1, 2014
In the past, there have been very few applications, so the odds are much better than the lottery.
VNLA will award scholarships of $1,500 to two or more students enrolled in a college of university for the next academic year and two or more scholarships of $750 to
students enrolled in 2-year community college program. Preference will be given first to Virginia residents attending a Virginia 2-year or 4-year college program and must be majoring in horticulture or related agricultural curriculum.
Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or equivalent, or a college student (rising freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior) taking at least nine credit hours per semester at an accredited college or university for the next
academic year. Applicant may be in an undergraduate program or in an associate's degree program at a community college. Graduate students are not eligible. Students may only receive one award from this fund.

4-H Intermediate Congress

National 4-H Healthy Living Ambassador- Applications Being Accepted!
The National 4-H Council is accepting applications for National 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors. They will be helpful in accomplishing the goals of the National 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate.
National Ambassadors will participate in 4-H Healthy Living face to face meetings at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland (not too far away from Orange!), participate in conference calls, work with coordinators to help plan and support healthy living programs, inform others of 4-H Healthy Living opportunities and resources, share ideas and resources, help develop state and local partnerships, and represent 4-H in a positive light and serve as a youth voice for 4-H Healthy Living.
To qualify to apply to be an ambassador, you must be 16-21 years old; have leadership experience in the 4-H program at a county, state, or national level; a passion for and active engagement in one of the key areas of 4-H Healthy living: nutrition, physical activity, alcohol-tobacco-drug intervention, safety or social emotional health (such as bullying or teen mental health); an interest in sharing knowledge; excellent social media skills; ability to work with county/local/community and state level professionals to share resources and opportunities; ability to communicate effectively; willingness to promote the 4-H Healthy Living Strategic Framework.
This would be an awesome opportunity to be involved with 4-H on a National Level. The National 4-H Center is in Maryland, which makes us very lucky as we are able to be more involved being so close to the center.

Goat Cloverbud Members Learn About the Parts of Baby Goat Kids
At their March meeting, members of the 4-H Goat Cloverbud Club were introduced to some new baby kids. The members played "Goat Twister" to learn the various parts of a goat's anatomy, but the goat kids were eager to play, too!
4-H Congress 2014
4-H Congress registration is now available! This is a statewide event being held June 16-19 in Blacksburg at Virginia Tech. This event is for senior 4-H members ages 14-19 (by September 30 of this year.)
The cost is $190 per participant, but scholarship money is available for those who compete at the county, district, and state contests in presentations, public speaking, extemporaneous speeches, and other areas.
For those not competing, there are workshops to learn about the different contests that you can compete in, plus workshops in the afternoon that cover many different topics- workshops in the past have covered everything from 3D printing, making stop-motion movies, making smoothies, and more! The workshops that will be offered this year will be available to choose from during the second phase of registration.
There will be many opportunities for youth to meet other 4-Hers from across the state- a picnic and mixer the first night, two dances, a carnival, and more. There is also a recognition and celebration luncheon on Wednesday.
All 4-Hers who are being tapped as an All Star this year will need to attend the tapping ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.
Students stay in the dorms on the Virginia Tech campus and eat in the dining halls (ranked in the top five in the nation!)
The first phase of registration (all forms and payment) are due to the Extension Office by April 20. The second phase of registration will be available soon after that where students will be able to make their workshop choices.

Virginia Grain Producers Association Offers $1,000 Scholarship
VGPA is awarding our annual $1,000.00 scholarship for a current or future full-time student (as of Fall 2014) at a Virginia institution of higher education. Applicants must be closely associated with members of the Virginia Grain Producers Association (VGPA), including: members (or dependents of a member) in good standing of the VGPA, or an active employee (or dependent of an active employee), employed at least one year, by a member in good standing of the VGPA. Applications are due April 1.
Young Agriculturalist Award Applications through Virginia Farm Bureau due March 31
Orange 4-H members are encouraged to apply for the Virginia Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Agriculturalist Award by March 31st. Our own Garret Chambers was the state winner last year! Current Juniors or Seniors in high school being able to apply. The state winner receives a $1,500 cash scholarship and finalists each receive $200. All finalists also receive an expense paid trip to the Young Farmers Summer Expo in Southside at the end of July.

STEM Essay Contest and Scholarship Announced for Junior and Senior High School Females
Governor McAuliffe and the Virginia Council on Women, in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia, announced the 3rd annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Essay Contest for high school junior and senior girls. The Council will award one $5,000 scholarship to a female junior or senior who will be pursuing a STEM career at an institution of higher education. Other scholarships may be awarded at the discretion of the Council.
To be eligible, one must be a female who resides in Virginia, be enrolled as a junior or senior in high school and hold at least a 2.5 GPA. Applications and guidelines are available online at: http://www.commonwealth.virginia.gov/information/council-on-women/. Entries must be submitted by March 30, 2014. The winning essays will be selected by a panel of judges who hold a degree in or work in STEM fields.
Winners will be notified by April 25, 2014. The scholarship award(s) will be presented at the 2014 Up & Atom Women’s Leadership Breakfast on May 7, 2014 at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 West Broad Street in Richmond.

2014 State 4-H Horse Show T-Shirt Design Contest
The guidelines for the 3rd Annual State Show T-Shirt Design Contest are now posted on the document library! The winning entry will have their artwork featured on the official State Show T-Shirt at the State Show in Lexington in September.
Please read the attached rules and entry form closely and submit your design. Please note that all designs must be postmarked no later than Friday, May 9th, 2014!!!
The artwork will be posted on the 4-H Horse Program website and the Virginia 4-H Horse Program Facebook page after May 15th so that 4-H members can vote for their favorite design. The design with the most votes overall will win!

Goat Club Visits S&R Meat Goats in Cumberland, VA
4-H Goat Cloverbud leaders Jonathan and Angelle Lippert organized a field trip to S&R Meat Goats for members of the Orange 4-H Goat Club this past weekend. We are grateful to the Rob French family for hosting our club, sharing their animals, and teaching our members more about meat goat production and exhibition.
