LAKE ORANGE CLEAN-UP BY ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL JR. B.A.S.S. FEDERATION CHAPTER

As a Community Service Project the OCHS Anglers spent an afternoon cleaning up the land and shoreline around Lake Orange. Floating debris, such as Styrofoam worm cans, pieces of furniture, along with metal cans, tires, amounting to nearly 500 lbs was collected. In 2009 the chapter collected nearly 700 lbs. at Lake Orange. They hope that this is an indication that the public is getting better at disposing of their trash in a proper manner. The public is also reminded that the OCHS Angler chapter has placed a monofilament (fishing line) recycling tube at the pavilion. Please dispose of used line here and not the trash cans. The line collected is sent to Berkley Corporation for recycling for the construction of fish habitats.

CRAZY PETS CLUB HAPPENINGS

Crazy Pets Club lives up to their name with their monthly events. In September, all of the members brought live insects to the meeting and did an insect study. The October meeting was host to a guest that spoke on animal rescues and the members made home-made dog treats. In November, the club took a field trip to Riki's Refuge for a tour and the members learned what it takes to run an animal sanctuary. The club discussed the possibility of running such an endeavor by donations and enlisting the help of volunteers.

4-H'ers' help needed

The LEGO club is faced with assembling 1,000 "swap" items for their state competition in December, and they can use our help. If you can help apply stickers to the souvenirs and goodies that our Orange team will be distributing, please e-mail the club leader at robotics4h@aol.com. This will not cost you anything, and the LEGO club will have all the supplies. Please consider helping out our fellow Orange 4-H members - thanks!

Circuit Breakers Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Orange 4-H Circuit Breakers WON their area competition in Richmond this past weekend. Coach Denise Snyder is very proud of the team and notes that they "represented 4-H with knowledge, class and style". (We love this!)

The team is headed to states now, which is the first weekend of December at James Madison University. The team will be practicing hard, multiple times each week until then. You can catch a demonstration of their work on Sunday at 4-H Achievement Day at the High School (3 p.m.).

Many thanks to the Circuit Breakers and their families for promoting 4-H. They heard many comments that folks thought 4-H was only for farming and animals. We are...but we're so much more, also!

Officer Training Well-Attended

Many thanks to the Orange 4-H club officers who attended the workshop on Saturday. Six counties were represented, and participants learned about Parliamentary Procedure, they conducted a mock business meeting, and they attended small groups to learn about the responsibilities of each office. Thanks for coming, and we hope you had fun!

4-H Livestock Club Raises $1,425 for Breast Cancer Research

Orange County 4-H Livestock Club members took a stand against cancer, and in favor of cancer research, at the county fair this past summer. Club members voted to donate $10 from the sale of every animal to breast cancer research, and some members and parents made additional monetary donations in support of the club's efforts. Club members wore pink T-shirts in the auction ring with purple animal hoof prints and a message that read "Stomping Out Cancer". The 4-H club's efforts resulted in a donation to "Susan G. Komen for the Cure" totalling $1,425. Pictured, left to right, are club members and a volunteer: Carol Koontz, adult volunteer, Kelly Shifflett, Zachary Swope, Cole Shifflett, and Hunter Koontz. All of these 4-H members are the grandchildren of C.T. and Maxine Henry of the Maples Farm on Old Gordonsville Road.

4-H Camp Dates Announced

There's a big change coming to the Orange 4-H calendar in 2011!!! Due to the extended school year, Orange-Madison 4-H Junior Camp will be held June 26-30, 2011, at the NOVA 4-H Center. We will be the third week of the camping season this year, not the first, so please keep this in mind as you make summer vacation plans. Other dates are not expected to change, such as counselor applications due January 31st and camper brochures available February 28th.

There will be a Cloverbud camp at the center for youth ages 5-8 June 12-16. This is a new summer program at the Center and we hope some Orange youth will take advantage of this opportunity. Cloverbud camp is smaller in size and will use only one dorm at the Center.

Finally, a 4-H District Camp will be held August 7-11. This is for youth ages 9-13 who couldn't get enough of camp for their cluster's week. So, yes, you CAN go to 4-H camp twice in one summer! District Camp serves 19 counties, so don't delay in letting the Center know you want to attend. Applications will be available on their website.

Congratulations to scholarship winners in the horse record book competition. This event is sponsored by the Northern District 4-H Horse Council. The council has generously donated monies for the record book winners to receive scholarships to various 4-H or horse events around the state. Orange County winners are Delaney O'Donnell ($50), of the Bit & Bridle Club, and Ashleigh Ramey ($25), and Bryan Ramey ($25) of the HoofMates Club. The judge was impressed by the work in the horse project clubs and especially proud of the work of these three 4-H'ers. Congratulations!!!

Also, the committee is looking for at least one representative from Orange. Any adult volunteers who are interested in attending (several meetings a year in Warrenton or Winchester), please contact the Extension Office. Thanks!
